Many thanks for your kind comments. This is one of those songs that defy labels. Ensconced away at the end of an album whose Killer Opening Song (or should that read 'Songs') are 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions', 'My Melancholy Blues' is the epitome of everything that made Queen one of the better rock bands in the world. Whilst the record 'News of the World' was released amidst fears that Freddie, Brian, Roger and John had somehow lost it because of the threat from punk (1977, remember?), the truth is that this is one of the rockiest albums ever made. 'Sheer Heart Attack', 'Fight From the Inside' and 'Get Down, Make Love'. It doesn't get any more rock'n'roll than that. And yet you have at the same time the subtleties of 'Spread Your Wings', 'Sleeping on the Sidewalk' and 'Who Needs You' (including the 'maracas'/rattles). This is gem of an album and the coda, 'My Melancholy Blues' is a beauty itself. Many thanks.

How can you not adore Freddie Mercury? I've always been a Queen fan and this did indeed stir up my Sunday!

It makes me laugh to see how young Freddie looks, CiL. I fully agree with you that Queen's talent and willingness to perform "unexpected" songs raises the group to a higher level of maturity and merit on the rock & roll scale.

Nothing like Queen to get a bit of nostalgia going on a Sunday afternoon.. Queen was one of the first concerts I ever went to with my mates at Wembley 1974 - the sight of Freddie in red lurex shorts is a sight you never forget!! Thanks for reminding me!!

Queen is a delight I typically take alone. I don't know why it's so hard to admit how much I love their music. It's a bright thread in the cosmic theatre that gives me so much joy.
