The world doesn’t need more ego-driven individualism, the consequence of which is uncertainty, both economic and political. The world needs more consistency. The world needs more John Malkovichs (or should that be Malkoviches?).
Consistency has been key to Malkovich’s output. This does not always translate as quality, but the actor is renowned for going where few of his peers dare to.
In a success-focused, happiness-chasing society where we are taught from an early age to try for the summit, it is useful to know that some people are just as content with soul-enriching projects, even if they are less financially remunerative. In Malkovich’s case, this scenario has played out in films where the process of building a character and exploring the depth of it has been more important than the amount of zeroes on the cheque.

Good words. I am in the process of making such a change as I wrote about here: http://skidawaypres.org/pastor/?p=3905

I’ve seen that movie several times: so original and thought provoking! I see it as a metaphor for the creative process, of becoming someone else and sharing that character with others. Also real people seeing themselves in a character and pushing back. I loved that they chose an offbeat actor such as him.
ReplyDeleteIf a person makes a movie that entertains me I will watch it. If not I'll stay home.
ReplyDeleteThe world needs LESS ego, not more. Quite a lot less.
ReplyDeleteI want and need consistency in my life and I believe most of us do. But.... a hurricane here, a global pandemic there.... sometimes consistency flies out the window, despite our best efforts.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen that movie but I think I will :))So I cant tell anything.John Malkovich is such a great actor..Seen many of his movies including the Killing Fields.Agree with Elephants child we need less ego ,not more

Thanks very much for sharing !
Glad you made the right choices, consistency if you will.
ReplyDeleteAmong my favorite paintings is one from 1882 by Victor Vasnetsov entitled, "A Knight at the Crossroads," which depicts a mounted Russian knight paused in front of a stone. Carved upon the stone are words which sort of describe our journey through life, I think. The words translate into something like these:
ReplyDeleteIf you go to the right -- you'll loose your horse;
If you go to the left -- you'll loose your life;
If you go forwards -- you'll loose both ....
Nice words.. I like John Malkovitch
ReplyDeleteAn insightful and timely piece. My dearest friend and I were discussing the merits of being consistent just this morning. Wishing you peace and joy.
ReplyDeleteYou are like my Brother.
ReplyDeleteTo our parents the business had top-priority, each mealtime it was about that mainly.
My Brother inherited it.
Tuesday afternoons he takes off, Wednesdays the whole day. Yes, he has to pay his staff extra to keep it running but he enjoys the time with his two young Daughters, that is HIS priority.
May you be more resilient and persistent in achieving expectations as did your inspiration John Malkovich,
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Indonesia.
... and John Malkovich is a good actor.
ReplyDeleteHappy September Wishes.
All the best Jan
Like Emma said, if it entertains me, I will watch it.
ReplyDeleteHi ACIL - excellent thinking in present times ... I know I need to settle to a routine - even if normality isn't around at the moment ... my life needs a routine and I can keep that going for another six months - when I hope life will be slightly easier. Thanks for this appropriate piece ... take care, stay safe, and you've done the right thing - well done ... Hilary
ReplyDelete"...some people are just as content with soul-enriching projects, even if they are less financially remunerative" - Ah, that also encapsulates where I went in life, although whether I went right or went wrong is debatable. (And hello again).
