What m...Holy Crap, Cuban, this was a powerful post. What made it so powerful for me was the level of personal feeling you put into it. I haven't read 'Wild Swans' but I'm going to check it out now.

The issue you mentioned of how the people themselves are often the propagators of a totalitarian regime relates, for me, back to the idea of collective guilt. The Germans after WWII had to come to terms with this. Just as the Rwandans and other people in other countries did.

You make a good point about these regimes - that it doesn't matter if it's communism or fascism or a theocracy, it's the same type of oppression that is fueled by the fanaticism of the people and also fueled by people not doing anything about it whether from apathy or fear.

At the same time there is also collective guilt in so many other ways. It might not be a nation or a regime but we all commit wrongs together that we try not to think about. Global warming. Poverty. Not providing universal healthcare.

I'm rambling but you started up so many thoughts in my head. Thanks for a great post.

I hope you're having a nice holiday.

JaiJai Joshihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04858987106548357551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165773290907101242.post-47035805930819672062010-04-07T19:46:40.601+01:002010-04-07T19:46:40.601+01:00I also loved that book and cried all the way thoug...I also loved that book and cried all the way though; tragedy upon tragedy and all in the name of a better world. I just put up a piece on a current exhibit in SF called "Notre Combat" - artists respond to Mein Kamph. I guess I wasn't prepared for the deluge of anti-Semitic, Holocaust deniers and just plain nasty comments that I got. That's why I moderate the comments on my blog but it's always frightening to see the level of toxic hatred that resides in far too many people. Mao and Hitler and Stalin could manipulate that hatred; let's hope that we don't see another leader like that ever again (but I'm not optimistic).Nancy Ewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12116290968007398337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165773290907101242.post-77514881435442299082010-04-07T01:28:59.806+01:002010-04-07T01:28:59.806+01:00Hope you are having a fabulous holiday.
