The author sets the scene and releases the characters and then listens to them, nudging them in one direction or another through revision. Writing dialogue feels like improv.

Thanks for reminding me to read Small Island – it is on my book shelf. Your good review will make me read it sooner.

I’m usually more interested in the Orange Prize winner than the Oscars although this year I very much appreciated the depth of Black Swan and The King’s Speech. My readers often say that my novels would make great movies. I'm quite a visual and dramatic writer, I guess. Will I get a beautiful evening gown?

I reviewed a book today that included Cuban American characters and thought of you.Sarah Laurencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00423008641739156182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165773290907101242.post-72192629836792488322011-02-26T21:38:18.143+00:002011-02-26T21:38:18.143+00:00Many thanks for your comments.

I think Jai Joshi is correct. Acting and writing fiction are highly complementary. Indeed, as I write about different characters, I use acting techniques to be able to develop an authentic character. Indeed, one of my favorite TV programs in the U.S. is Jim Lipton’s Inside the Actor’s Studio. I have learned more from listening to actors describe how they develop their characters than from any writing textbook.Judith Mercadohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13739476600999112092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165773290907101242.post-16218702050407684182011-02-25T19:31:07.942+00:002011-02-25T19:31:07.942+00:00So well thought out and written, ACIL. But at the end of the day, our creative minds work so differently at interpreting a story. She has to work within a reality setting for film and work with real live people (actors), whereas in my setting all bets are off, I work with the audience imagination & subconscience, like magic.

I love the excerpt you give us for 'Small Island'. I will definitely read. As a writer I have to live in lots of characters bodies and see the world from their perspective, reach the reader with their hands. I had to do just the same as an actor and that is what I love about both art forms. They are both forms of storytelling.

JaiJai Joshihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04858987106548357551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165773290907101242.post-57590658738473698242011-02-24T17:11:28.836+00:002011-02-24T17:11:28.836+00:00Many thanks for your kind comments.
